Just half an hour from Paris, millions flock there to stand for hours in line in the palace courtyard, only then to be herded round the same stuffy and cramped rooms forced along by the crowd. VERSAILLES GARDENS
many people might not know that a visit to versailles can be so much more than just a look around the main palace. the gardens are the true delight of this old royal residence. take a day to explore the hameau de la reine, marie antoinette’s fantasy land (photos 1,5) and the grand trianon, the home of louis xiv’s secret wife (photo 7). ride around the apollo fountain and grand canal (photo 2), and take in the fountains and individual flair of the french formal gardens (photos 3, 4, 6 and 8).
the gardens measure up at over 2000 acres, so it’s always possible to find a quiet corner in to a picnic, and find another architectural masterpiece just around the corner, if you know where to go of course!
